"Nibbles" (nibbles)

We’re going to paint this truck soon but I’m not sure which direction to head. I wanted Plum Crazy but, after factoring in what this truck is and its intended purpose, I can’t justify a paint job of that quality.
Solid axle swaps and new suspension are in the works. So is hopping up the engine a tad (230/300 is okay, but my Volvo makes the same numbers with 3 less cylinders). It’s not a fancy truck nor will it ever be. It’s going to be a toy - a mudding, trail-running, shit-hauling overglorified work truck. I’m not planning on removing many dents or making the body anywhere near perfect. But it needs something other than 20-year-old Mopar paint and canned primer.
What to do? I’m open to non-thousands-of-dollars ideas that aren’t just "give it the Krylon touch" or "LOL Rhino Liner"

Start whitewashing it, then con the neighborhood kids into finishing the job.

I say thick coat of the original paint, I think it looks good in that dark green, with silver R/T stripes or two-tone it.
Actually the two-tone green-silver with silver R/T stripes would look pretty boss.

Masking tape and spray paint. Or rustolium roll on method.

I think that falls in the “Krylon touch” category

If you are concerned about price, don’t expect much and you won’t be disappointed. I work in a body shop and get people coming by all the time asking about good cheap paint jobs. There is no such thing. That said there are interesting alternatives.

Saw this a while back and thought it was an interesting idea. Hard to get it any cheaper.

A wrap is probably cheaper than you think, especially a simple single color one. Doubt a pre-cut exists for the GenII Dakota though. Remove the lower door/door ding protection and then glue them on top of the wrap if you want to keep them.
Do tri-y’s (if Thorley makes them still - or long tubes if they fit around the SAS), a bigger/ported TB, swap the intake manifold (at least do the gasket mod), and maybe an electric fan (Taurus, Mark VIII). If you’re brave a cam and ported heads will do wonders for the 5.2 Mag.
Doing a 78-79 Bronco Dana 44 SAS? Think about a 8 3/4 (from a early 70s D/W150), or a 9 1/4 from a Ram for the rear if you want to stay Mopar, otherwise a 8.8 from an Explorer should work (and get rear discs).

Monstaliner. Scuff with pad then roll on in garage. Very nice orange peel texture. Used it on my rough jeep body and it turned out well. Only cost a couple hundred dollars.

I’m not expecting an AOne job as I’m expecting the truck to get beat up and scratched. Wherever it goes I’ll have the trim/accessories/etc removed before dropping it off. I’m just wanting something that will hold up, be relatively even and look good from 10 feet

If I can find a garage, I’ll look into this

I was thinking of trying to source both axles from the same donor as I hate the thought of mismatched hubs etc. The Dana 44 is definitely on my radar. As for the engine mods, it’s almost like you already read my shopping list :)
Will vinyl hold up to brush/branch scrapes?

Rams are 5x5.5 like the Bronco. 9.25 is fine if you get a locker. The factory LSD will explode at some point. Starting in the early 2000s they self destruct. If you use a Bronco D44 you could also grab the 9". The Explorer is 5x4.5, but you can redrill the axles. D44 is nice because the T-case drop is on the driver side, unlike any Chevy axles. Plus the coil front suspension is a pretty easy change although requires some brains and welding. You could do a Ram or Jeep GW D44 w/leafs, but leafs. Ugh.
Wraps standup alright, no worse than paint. Lots of Raptor guys wrap their trucks so the OEM paint survives when they go out and play.

good to know about the wraps re: Wraptors. And yeah the writeups I’ve seen on dak swaps tend to lean to the GW axles but I’m in agreement with you. Fuck leaf springs. I’ve considered Ram axles but from what I’ve found they’re a bit on the too-wide-for-midsize range. Factory width is about 60", I hope to stay at or about that.
